NK Escapee to Continue Anti-China Demonstration

A North Korean escapee in the United States has vowed to continue her solo demonstration protesting China’s forced repatriation of North Korean asylum seekers.

Cho Jin-hae was originally scheduled to hold a news conference early Tuesday, Korean time, in Washington, but had to cancel as she was unable to leave the hospital where she was receiving treatment. She has been hospitalized since she lost consciousness earlier on Saturday ― the 14th day of her hunger strike ― in front of the Chinese embassy in Washington.

A Korean pastor who is helping Cho told KBS that Cho’s health is in a poor state, and although she is unable to continue her hunger strike, she plans to continue a one-person demonstration until the end of the Beijing Olympics.

Cho settled in Seattle after she was granted asylum in March of this year. She met President George W. Bush late last month.

NK, Japan to Discuss Abduction at China Talks

North Korea and Japan will hold working-level talks Monday and Tuesday in China’s northeastern city of Shenyang to discuss the North’s past abductions of Japanese citizens.

In the June talks on the issue, North Korea promised to launch a fresh investigation into the kidnapping of Japanese citizens in the 1970s and 1980s, reversing its long-standing position that the issue had been resolved.

Japan’s NHK said Thursday that the planned bilateral talks will focus on details of the potential probe, such as timing, method and scope.

Tokyo reportedly plans to ease some of the trade sanctions on North Korea if the bilateral talks produce significant results.

U.S. Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama says if North Korea does not abandon its illicit nuclear program, it should face strong sanctions.

Speaking at the University of Purdue in Indiana, he said North Korea and Iran have a history of support for terror.

He said by staying committed to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, the U.S. will be in a better position to rally international support for continued pressure on violating nations like North Korea and Iran.
