The eighth round of anti-government candlelight vigils has resulted in injuries to protesters and police in central Seoul.

Thousands of people took part in the rally from Saturday evening, including members of the Korean Teachers and Education Workers’ Union and the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions.

They gathered near the Jonggak subway station around nine p.m. and occupied the streets, protesting the government’s plan to liberalize the education sector.

Demonstrators also demanded the dissolution of the ruling Grand National Party and the ousting of the Lee Myung-bak government.

Police and demonstrators clashed when police rushed to disperse the protesters around 11:30 p.m. Saturday, leading to injuries on both sides.

Nine protesters were arrested for violence against police officers during the rally.
