The National Security Council convened for the first time under the Lee Myung-bak administration to discuss key defense issues.

Friday’s meeting focused on the recent tourist shooting at Mount Geumgang and Japan’s renewed territorial claims over the Dokdo islets.

Participants of the meeting reportedly reviewed the current government’s policies on foreign affairs and national defense.

The National Security Council is the highest consultative body to the president as stipulated by the Constitution. It is comprised of the prime minister, the ministers of foreign affairs, unification and defense as well as the head of National Security Intelligence.

In the previous Roh Moo-hyun government, the council convened eight times.
