Pres. Office Calls Yomiuri Report Groundless

The presidential office angrily denied a Japanese daily’s report which claimed President Lee Myung-bak asked Japan’s Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda to postpone his decision on the Dokdo issue during their meeting on the sidelines of the G-8 summit.

Presidential spokesman Lee Dong-kwan called Yomiuri Shimbun’s report groundless. The spokesman said the president clearly told Fukuda that Seoul wouldn’t accept any Japanese claim over Dokdo and that such actions would not help in promoting a future-oriented bilateral relationship.

The spokesman accused the Japanese daily of spreading false information and attempting to cause a rift between the two countries. He said South Korea would not tolerate a media stunt by Japan.

Meanwhile, an official from Cheong Wa Dae said the Japanese prime minister might have asked for understanding on the Dokdo issue during the brief meeting with the president. However, the official went on to say that it was not a notification of an eventual Japanese claim to the territory.
