7-Year Prison Term Sought for Ex-Samsung Chief

An independent council on Thursday demanded a seven-year prison term for former Samsung Group Chairman Lee Kun-hee on corruption charges.
Special Prosecutor Cho Joon-woong also sought a 350 billion won fine for Lee.
Cho said that the chairman of the conglomerate, in exerting his management rights, pursued private interests and engaged in illegal behavior through his secretarial office.
However, Lee’s attorneys pleaded not guilty of illegal stock transactions, while asking for leniency over his tax evasion charges.
In a closing testimony, Lee apologized for causing social troubles and appealed to the court to show leniency to other Samsung executives who were also indicted.
