A growing number of Korean students are leaving the nation to study abroad.

The Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education said some 15-thousand elementary, middle and high school students in Seoul left for study in foreign countries last year, up from seven-thousand two years ago.

Particularly noteworthy is the rise in the number of elementary school students studying abroad. Their ranks nearly doubled to 82-hundred last year from 49-hundred in 2006.

The surge is attributed to intense pressure among Koreans to learn English. Also, many young students want to study abroad to ease their entry into foreign-language high schools in Korea.

Big Foreign Investors Fast-Tracked for Residency

Foreigners in South Korea will be eligible for immediate permanent residency if they invest more than 500-thousand dollars here and employ more than five Koreans.

The new regulation will likely come into effect in October.

In the past, foreigners could gain permanent resident status immediately if they invested more than two million dollars and hired more than five Koreans.

For investments under two million dollars, foreigners had to live in Korea for more than three years before becoming eligible for permanent resident status.

In the Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, the government also decided to simplify administrative procedures for overseas travel by those serving in the army.
