Woo Hyun Competition Fetes 10th Anniversary

The Woo Hyun Competition, a competition for young artists in honor of the late trombone player, marks its 10th anniversary with a special performance Friday at JangCheon Arts Hall in Sinsa-dong, southern Seoul.

The competition was founded in 1998 after Lee Woo Hyun, a promising sophomore at Seoul National University, died in an unfortunate fire accident. Lee’s teachers established the foundation with support from her parents. The annual competition is a chance to share the late trombone player’s passion for music and foster young musicians.

The finalists of past competitions will take to the stage, including Lee Mi-sung, who is currently first oboist at the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra; Lee Jun-won, first bassoonist at the Incheon Philharmonic; Choi Yoon, horn player at the Seoul Philharmonic; and Im Sang-soo, associate principal clarinetist at the Seoul Philharmonic. The Prime Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Mok Wan-soo, will join the soloists.

The young winners of this year’s competition will perform as well: marimba player Kang Yoon-seo (Gawon Elementary School), flutist Song Da-in (Sohyeon Elementary School), bassoonist Kim Jin-woo (Seoul Arts High School), oboist Kim In-gyeong (Seoul Arts High School) and horn player Park Seung-shil (Sunhwa Arts High School) among others.

There will be two concerts, at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Both are free of charge and admission will be offered on a first come, first served basis. Call (02) 537-5012.
